metal/punk punk/metal? do I need a number two pencil?
Has anyone ever felt "in the middle" of where they sit on the punk/metal continuum. On one had I'm not a metal head what so ever. On the other hand I'm not a punk either. I know the short answer is that everyone is an individual blah blah blah but I kind of wonder how many other people feel this way. I guess if I had to pick one end of punk I would aim more toward the crust side of things and if it were metal then on the grindcore end of things...which basically is 6 in one hand half dozen in the other when all is said and done. Have a nice weekend.

I feel "in the middle" of just about everything rock n' roll oriented from Johnny Thunders to Bathory to Muddy Waters. Anything that goes through the ears and sets the blood on fire is good. It's never really bothered me but I think it's strange how some people can just be hell-bent on one thing and one thing only, but those guys are few. If I really had to pick one thing that I dig more than anything it's just raw Iggy & the Stooges style stuff, but I can't drive around listening to Search and Destroy or I'd be in jail.

I've seen the one style only people. And they usually end up being something completely different by the time they are 25 yrs old. Maybe even sooner. It seems that the ones who have varied tastes in Rock N Roll are the ones who usually don't change much over the years.
Re: metal/punk punk/metal? do I need a number two pencil?
I just don't see it as a vanilla vs chocolate world. I start to wonder what's up with people when they start explaining musical tastes in terms of "I hate...".
This is all silly. I have no clue why I even brought this up. Probably pissed off at a magazine article or something I read on the interhole.

You like what you like, and shouldnt try to fit in a pointless stereotype.
Re: metal/punk punk/metal? do I need a number two pencil?
I'll get pissed off about hipsters and "scene" police again the next time I have to deal with people under the age of 25.
On another sub sub sub note I think it's weird that people ask this board for club and venue advice but no one to my knowledge asked about where to find and shop for records. I've lived here long enough to know the answers but damn, Music city? and half a dozen music stores?

I went to Grimey's the other day, it was really cool. Also, the Great Escape was pretty bad ass when I went.
Re: metal/punk punk/metal? do I need a number two pencil?
pretty much anyone who gets on here for metal are in the same boat.
as in there are probably folks who like punk rock on here that don't like metal, but i don't think there are any folks who like metal on here that don't like punk rock.

and on the 7th day-ah the masses created the cross over-ah and all was well.
I know exactly why I ended up this way. You have bands on the easier to listen to end of the "metal" spectrum like faith No more, who covered the Dead Kennedys. In a internet free early 90's one of the ways kids found new music was to look at what t-shirts bands wore. The bass player wore a napalm death shirt and Napalm Death covered the Dead Kennedys. Through several other steps like this I found Sepultura, who in turn covered DK's again. You can only get hit in the head that many times before you go out and buy Fresh Fruit... Another thing that was big back in upstate NY was the whole NYHC thing. I know it was thought of and deserved to be thought of as a meat head scene but It did have some tie to something that hearkened back to actual Hardcore punk. I dabbled in that. I think my first all ages show was Agnostic Front. The bands which i was mostly interested in were the ones with something to say. I didn't care if I wasn't interested in the message I was just interested in hearing stuff that was about real things and not dragons and wizards.
My point after rambling is that I think how, when and where you got into something like punk colors how you are always going to think of it. This is why Punk and Metal are pretty much interconnected for me. I think I learned a lot from coming up like this though. I learned about DIY when zines were huge. I also found out that you didn't have to get a "producer" and rent a "studio" to make a record. Things like straight edge, although not something I was into influenced the whole scene in that people had to have more integrity to be taken seriously.
Then again Hardcore was something metal bands called themselves back in the day because metal was a dirty word.

same with punk. you didnt call your band punk back in the day. you said hardcore or street or thrash or something like that.
when mixing punk and metal i sway more towards the bands with punk speed and metal melodies and solos. i dont care for that crossover thrash with super fast short riffs that have no dynamic. i really like NWOBHM shit. or the more metal stuff punk bands came out with later in their careers.

Re: metal/punk punk/metal? do I need a number two pencil?
i definitely favor punk over metal.
i used to have more of an appreciation for metal than I do these days. could be the fact that the shows are over run with underage scene kids that turned me off in the first place. but to further my newfound disliking, pregnancy has made metal trigger my anxiety in a major way. i cannot take blast beats at this point in time.
but good riddance. never loved it enough to miss it. unless ofcourse, you wanna talk 80's metal <3

Re: metal/punk punk/metal? do I need a number two pencil?
So I guess based on what people have said that crust, grindcore and power violence aren't so popular around here. I'm not huge on melodic punk or what have you in terms of that stuff I tend to be Ok with it but that's not where I park my horse most of the time.
I think the biggest detriment to metal is it's fans. I can't stand metal shows really, I try and fail at being ok with that many metal heads in that small of a space.
My experience with punk is always one of three ways. The first people are pretty cool and Ok with what ever other people say or are talking about. The other is The whole punk pissing contest. The third is your typical kid that doesn't know or understand much in terms of Punk beyond "holy shit I just gave myself a green mohawk."
Because I am feeling beat about the neck and head tonight I'm going to make a list of stuff I like. I usually hate lists.
Oi Polloi
Crass
kittens...and for the sake of music, The Kittens
KEN Mode
The cows
Vikings
noise rock
godflesh
sludge
the first half of Black flags crap
stomp boxes
twizzlers
Napalm Death
Neurosis
Rudimentary Peni
Sharpie Fine Points
Those Diskmen that run on one battery.

Re: metal/punk punk/metal? do I need a number two pencil?
That's funny. We called our band a punk band. Because "back in the day" it hadn't quite been broken down into so many categories. Their were skate punks and cow punks and all other kinds of punk but it was all just punk. Now alternative was a whole different thing "back in the day".wakmaster wrote:same with punk. you didnt call your band punk back in the day. you said hardcore or street or thrash or something like that.
